ONE: Hard and Uplifting Stuff

Hard Stuff

I’m not here to debate politics but to share the emotional roller coaster I experienced during the US election mixed with some Canadian National and Provincial wrangling—feelings many of my friends and clients also faced. Some say, “Don’t take it so personally. Ignore it! It’s just politics.” Just politics?

The 1960s feminist phrase “the personal is political,” was also used in the civil rights movement, and speaks to how social and political decisions influence, if not determine, our rights, freedoms, security, choices, and well-being.

I grew up believing to be a responsible citizen meant staying engaged and voting thoughtfully; not that I had US voting privilege. Politics can deeply affect our sense of safety. When divisive, angry debates create uncertainty and threaten our sense of security, our nervous systems can react with distress.

So how can we stay responsibility informed while maintaining a sense of personal peace? My over-simplified answer is have the skills to return to center. ❤️🐞

This message was sent to me from an American friend.

Uplifting Stuff

Every Sunday, hundreds of Calgarians in need, many of whom are homeless, gather at St. Mary’s community hall for a “Feed the Hungry” nourishing meal. Once a year, my husband Les' Rotary Club sponsors the meal, covering the cost of the food, and providing dozens of volunteers.

Les and I volunteered as servers, each taking care of two tables of six guests. Throughout three rounds of 12 guests, one person stood out to me. Let’s call him Joe. Joe was charming, friendly, and articulate—an expert on the life of billionaire Warren Buffett. He knew Buffett’s morning routine, the secrets behind his fortune, and much more.

Chatting with Joe was a pleasure, and at the end of the meal, he thanked me: “Thank you, Patricia. You did a good job serving us.” Sweet, right? But as he picked up his nap sack filled with his belongings, I couldn’t help but wonder where he would rest his head that night.

It struck me: there’s no “us and them”. There’s just us, humans doing our best in a sometimes cold world. I’m lucky to have a warm, cozy home and a comfy bed, and that night, I felt especially grateful.

When was the last time you had an experience that deepened your sense of gratitude?

Here’s to your continued resilience!

TWO: Patricia’s Helpful Blogs/Articles

The world needs more kindness! In some moments, on some days, someone feels hurt, sad, angry, frustrated, discouraged, worried or anxious.  It might be you, your children, your spouse, your friend, your neighbor or a coworker. That’s a probability.   Also, true is demonstrating sincere kindness can positively affect your family, community and, yes, the world.

It was several years ago that our son, Benjamin Morgan, principle of the Canadian based Centre for Crisis and Risk Communication introduced me to Dr. Vincent Covello. I soon developed a deep curiosity about his informed perspectives and his work in high-stress situations.. . .

While listening to advice on how to handle high-stress situations, I thought about domestic violence, significant conflict in the workplace and at home, including moments with out-of-control teens.

I also recalled the distress I have witnessed in clients, friends and family such as death of loved ones, invasion of thieves into the home, car accidents, discovery of partners’ infidelity, and life-threatening diagnosis. As Dr. Covello described. . . CLICK HERE
