ONE. On a Personal Note

Hard Stuff

Getting older includes some hard stuff! My hubby, Les, tells me I talk louder than necessary, that he can hear me working online from way upstairs, and that I’m mishearing—hearing the wrong words more often.

Small font is fuzzy to read. My recent purchase of new glasses was a comedy of errors, from the wrong prescription to having to reorder frames because the ones I chose were discontinued.

If I don’t move often enough, my ankles swell up like tree trunks. Back in 2011, I had blood clots in my right leg, so the veins are stretched. I used to wonder, in my younger years, why old people had chunky-looking legs.

Lastly, I’m on a five-year hormone therapy to help prevent the return of breast cancer. Its main side effect? Fatigue.

Darn it all! I’m a Spunky Senior!

Uplifting Stuff

Friend, Stephanie Staples, Me, Les, & Kelly ❤️🐞

Les, our dear Kelly, and I took a road trip to Vancouver Island at the beginning of the month. It was so lovely to spend time near water, to breathe in the blossoms of Butchart Gardens, and to connect with friends. When is the last time you left home just for the heck of it?

Another recent highlight experience was being in front of a keen-to-learn audience. I delivered a Return to Center workshop for Alberta’s Community Learning Network. The feedback nourished my optimism and gratitude. Here are four comments out of dozens:

  • “It was awesome. If you get a chance sit with her.”

  • “She’s high energy, safe, and very entertaining.”

  • “I loved her humor and passion.”

  • “She’s knowledgeable, fun, and informed.”

Icing on the cake, was my friend, Brandi Heather, who went from professor to play expert, was the dynamic closing keynote speaker.

We all need to be seen, heard and acknowledged. How do you fill that need in your part of the world?

In the meantime, here’s to your continued resilience,
Patricia ❤️🐞

TWO: Patricia’s Helpful Blogs/Articles

Kristin Neff’s book  Self-Compassion: Stop Beating Yourself Up and Leave Insecurity Behind was published in 2011.  Neff provides research and stories illustrating the importance of compassion toward ourselves.  She also offers easy exercises that invite self-awareness, as well as self-compassion. But her research began long before that in the early. . . CLICK HERE

“Lean on me, when you’re not strong
And I’ll be your friend, I’ll help you carry on. . .

Yes, we all need someone to lean on!

It was at Sunday Service when Amy Bishop began singing Lean on Me, I thought of our world that often praises self-sufficiency and independence. Bill Withers’ 1972 classic, “Lean on Me,” offers a healthier message: that reaching out, leaning in, and depending on. . . CLICK HERE
