ONE. On a Personal Note

Hard Stuff

A Shadow Experience

I had a strange mix of emotions watching the recent war of words between Donald Trump and Elon Musk. Part of me felt delighted, even giddy—like two playground bullies finally turning on each other. I noticed myself thinking things like, “They’re giving each other what they deserve” or “Maybe they’ll cancel each other out.”

And then came the embarrassment. Wait… aren’t I a peace-loving, compassionate person? Where was this gloating, judgmental part of me coming from? Why was a part of me enjoying the drama? After all I help clients step out of their drama.

It was uncomfortable to admit, but also insightful. Maybe it’s because many of us are exhausted by the misuse of power, self-promotion, and people, who play unfairly. Watching them clash was weirdly satisfying.

But rather than judging ourselves for the reaction, maybe we can get curious. Maybe these feelings are pointing to deeper truths: a longing for justice, accountability, or even the hope that inappropriate power might turn on itself.

We all carry light and shadow. And sometimes, when the Big Boys wrestle, our inner contradictions show up.

What about you?

Love of Speaking & New Role

My counselling therapy practice brings me deep purpose and connection. Yet it is when I have opportunities to speak; that is uplift, inform, or simply have meaningful fun with audiences, I feel lit up. See images above.

In the counselling therapy arena, I am now officially the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), Alberta & Northwest Territories, Regional Director. What a mouthful! There are over 2000 CCPA members in the region. I’m turning feelings of nervousness into excitement and purpose. Indeed, this is an exciting time for those of us working to address mental health issues.

What’s exciting or pleasing activities or causes have ignited your excitement?

In meantime, here’s to your continued resilience,

Have you ever said or done anything you regret?  I am not talking about a fumble mumble or tripping over the front hall rug.  Rather, I am referring to disrespecting someone, emotionally wounding another, or crossing over a personal boundary. I’ve done my fair share. For example, . . CLICK HERE

THREE: Resiliency Research

Recalling memories in depth is more powerful than writing them down

In research by Sonja Lyubomirsky of the University of California, it was found that people who wrote down favorite memories felt much better afterwards but not as good as those who just replayed the memories in their heads.

(The opposite is true for troubling memories - writing them down helps you feel better but ruminating about them results in people feeling worse)

I encourage you to find an uplifting memory and take it to bed each night. Or find a different affirming memory for each night’s sweet dreams. Here’s to your memories!
