ONE. On a Personal Note
Hard Stuff
Don’t take Other People’s Behaviors and Decisions Personally!
I know this. You probably do, too. I take comfort in loving my clients who come for therapy, as doing so allows me to express compassion and empathy. My primary role is to hold space for their healing journey, not to carry their pain.
Yet, when a client disappears without explanation, I struggle with feelings of uncertainty and self-doubt. I wonder if I failed to meet their needs or misstepped in some way. It’s challenging not to take their decision personally, even when I know it’s likely about their own journey. I have the urge to chase, to pursue. That’s my story.
Then I ‘return to center’ and remind myself they know where I am. The simple boundary statement of “Be and let be” helps bring grounding to my work. ❤️🐞

Is Age 78 Too Old?
Too old for what? T’was interesting to muse, a word often used by my friend, Louise Gallagher, about my 78th birthday. I even thought, “Will I be up to celebrating at 80? Just in case I will make 78 a whopper!”

Friends and family gathered and our darling Kelly commented, “Mom, you glowed all day.” If you have an extroverted personality, I recommend gathering those in your love circle for a special reason or no reason. Glow!
Here’s to your continued resilience!

A phone call from Hanna, Alberta prompted me to create a talk called, Merry Love-making: How to Enliven Long Term Intimacy. It has been presented at numerous women’s conferences and a Foster Parent retreat.

Even as an adult, time with my father felt edgy. You see, to the end of his life he had regular volatile angry outbursts. As a child, I was emotionally, verbally, and physically abused by him. Yet, through therapy, I progressed from dealing with my own lack of anger management skills to resentment to curiosity. My therapist said, “You give yourself the gift of healing when you let go of resentment and forgive your parents.”
I held some resentment towards my mother for not. . . CLICK HERE
From the early 1990s, I have had Susan Jeffers’ classic publication, Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway prominent on my bookcase. I recommend it to my clients, as it is one of the most practical, clear, and common sense self-help books ever written. My clients experience positive change even when they merely accept the title’s powerful . . . CLICK HERE.
Parenthood is a profound journey, marked by a multitude of emotions and challenges. It’s a path where love, responsibility, and self-discovery frequently converge. In a recent discussion with a client, the intricacies of being a parent were highlighted and we decided this role extends well beyond nurturing and care. This mother’s inner struggle with guilt and responsibility prompted me to ponder how we can better navigate this parental role. It’s often hard for us to stop taking. . . CLICK HERE
