Hard Stuff
What Happened? It’s Hard to be Canadian!

What? Being Canadian is suddenly a problem. Are you kidding me? Our beloved place on the globe is problematic?
I recently attended an online program about getting speaking engagements in the US. I was comfortable with “be a little bolder, not quite so polite,” and “be direct and make the problem you solve clear” but when I heard “take a photo of yourself in front of the American flag” my stomach knotted. No way. If I have a flag in a photo, it will be the Maple Leaf. I am a proud Canadian!
What about you? ❤️🐞

Giving and Receiving Love Brings Joy

In this month of love my days have been filled with giving and receiving heart-centered gestures. Hubby, Les and I hosted a sixtieth birthday party for our dear friend, Alnoor Damji. Alnoor has repeatedly done kitchen duty for my gatherings for women, authors, professional speakers, therapists, and my cancer treatment completion celebration. It felt satisfying to see him lap up the out-of-kitchen attention.
Early each February, I craft a dozen and more Valentines for loved ones and a handful of friends who live alone. it just feels darn good to do it!
February 13 and 14 I delivered three psycho-education messages and received ample mini-love notes from the audience, members of the Calgary Board of Education Support Staff. I was in my happy zone with Les as my technology Wing Man for their online conference. The three sessions, each 3-hours long were, How to Build Student Resilience, First Steps to Inner Child Work, and Speaking Up with Courage and Listening with Compassion. Yes, I delivered 9-hours of content and I loved every moment of it, including the odd technology challenge!
The evening of February 14 Les and I went out to dinner and enjoyed the musical repertoire of friend, Jacqueline Drew.
How did you send and receive love this month?
In the meantime, here’s to your continued resilience.

At some point, we’ve all tried to control our relationships, especially with loved ones. Yet, the idea that we can control another human being’s thoughts, emotions, and choices is not only unrealistic but also can create relationship misunderstanding and friction. True personal power, freedom, and connection come from letting go of the illusion of control.

“Lacking a sense of psychological safety, people shut down, often without realizing it. They are less likely to seek or accept feedback and also less likely to experiment, to discuss errors, and to speak up about potential or actual problems.”
Christine Porath, professor, at Kenan-Flagler Business School, University of North Carolina and author of Mastering Civility
The topic of psychological safety often emerges when I work with my counselling therapy clients. Many of them struggle to work in toxic environments while others are often in relationships with emotional, mental, and sometimes . . . CLICK HERE
