ONE. Hard and Uplifting Stuff

Hard Stuff

Krista Malden (1980–2024), a passionate Calgary community builder, mental health advocate, and founder of Community Now! Magazine, last month died far too soon.

Krista organized an annual December Mental Health Day, recognizing the challenges of the season. She encouraged me personally in many ways: she gifted me a ticket to this year’s event, which was later canceled, invited me to write for her magazine, and during COVID, asked me to create an uplifting Christmas video for her followers. Note: An edited video-clip is below.

Known for her quirky personality, pink hair, and infectious laugh, Krista will be missed. She is survived by her daughters, Zanika and Xalynn. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the GoFundMe supporting her daughters to honor her legacy. /gofund.me/7f6ffa7c. If you knew Krista or knew of her, I thought you might want to contribute. ❤️🐞

Why I Love Being a Therapist (While Not Being Perfect)

Naturally, I have recently been thinking about Krista and mental health. My conclusion is being a trauma-informed therapist is deeply meaningful to me. It’s not about being perfect but about showing up with compassion, presence, and a willingness to meet others where they are.

It’s a privilege to be trusted with someone’s story, to witness their resilience, and to see their growth. At this stage in my life, with years of skill and experience, I feel a sense of ease in the work and joy in giving what I can.

Here are a few of the gifts my meaningful work brings me — a sense of purpose, making a difference, the privilege of being trusted, compassionate practice, including crying with, heart opening, being present, lifelong learning, and the joy of witnessing resilience and growth.

Lastly, what do you love about one or more of your life roles?

Here’s to your continued resilience!

The key? Small, intentional shifts that fit YOU into your schedule. You don’t need extra hours—just small steps to care for your mind, body, and well-being. Here’s how you can make it . . . CLICK HERE

Happy Holidays! Happy Holidays! Let’s celebrate the holidays! As The Holidays approached, my hubby said, “I want our cards to read Merry Christmas, not Seasons Greetings. I want to celebrate Christmas.” Hmm, but what meaning does he attribute to the word and celebration we call Christmas? What is his TRUE meaning of Christmas? T’was the night before an interesting discussion.
