Hard Stuff

Radiation, as prevention for the return of breast cancer, was mildly hard; actually more of a time nuisance.

Uplifting Stuff

  1. Fortunately, only five radiation treatments were recommended and the Tom Baker Cancer Centre is filled with stellar professionals. To as many of them as I could, I delivered this little mantra: "We appreciate you. We need you. Please stay." Consider doing the same thing the next time you have a medical appointment or procedure.

I took a vavoom outfit, clappers and pompoms to help the Ring the Bell celebration of treatment completion. Patients and staff alike joined in the fun. Want to see the action and hear the bell ring? CLICK HERE!

  1. Last week I woke up thinking, “I miss facilitating personal development/therapy groups. So, I put one together.” Please let me know if you are interested. And, if you know anyone in Calgary and area who would benefit, please tell them about Return to Center: A Six-Week Calgary Support and Healing Group. See details below.

  2. Your Uplift subscriber and long-time friend, Sandy Brown, has been sending me feminist, excitement-filled articles, interviews, and images of Kamala Harris. Regardless of your political view, it is an energizing time for women.

  1. Last but not least, I received two beautifully affirming messages from Your Uplift readers. Marilyn, in part, wrote, “Your resilience is such a wonderful example of living life well. Thank you for continuing to keep me on your your list for the Your Uplift newsletter.” Alexis wrote, in part, “I cannot tell you how helpful and thought-provoking this newsletter has been. It’s like a friend arriving in my inbox,” Thank you, Alexis and Marilyn, for acknowledging my body of work.

    Here’s to your continued resilience!

Before we can attempt to help build resilience in others, we need to understand the concept. Resilience is the ability or capacity to cope with, or recover from, change, adversity, mistakes, and sometimes poor behavior. It is like a rubber band. Both are about being stretched and returning to their original condition or even improved.

It is a given that humans all have flesh, hearts, and brains. However, we are as different and diverse in our personalities as in our DNA. Sometimes it can be helpful to cluster those personalities into tendencies for the benefit of understanding and improved interaction.  I have found knowing the difference between an introverted and extroverted preference helpful with family, friends, and. . . Notice Cindy’s brilliance of distilling lessons from our conversation. We chat about being a parent and how to learn and grow through challenging and demanding family dynamics.

A MESSAGE from Cindy Thompson:
“What does it take to transform life's most challenging seasons into a story of hope and inspiration?

In this powerful episode, we delve into the extraordinary journey of Patricia Morgan , author of "Love Her as She Is." Patricia's story is a testament to the unpredictable, heartwarming, and often heartbreaking journey of motherhood. When Patricia and her husband adopted their daughter Kelly at age 6, they embarked on a path filled with profound love, unique challenges, and endless fears. Years of navigating life's peaks and valleys together brought clarity when Kelly was diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).

As a mother, coach, clinical counsellor, and author, Patricia is no stranger to adversity. Both a student and teacher of life, Patricia shares her inspiration for writing this book for Kelly, what she learned from Kelly, and what fuels the limitless love and strength within us all.

Patricia identifies the adversities that shaped her resilience journey and reveals her "secret sauce" for maintaining extraordinary energy and drive. Currently battling cancer, Patricia’s spirit remains unshaken, and her light shines bright!

Here are some key takeaways that truly resonated with me:
1. Embrace Change: Change is the only constant. Instead of resisting it, lean into it and find opportunities for growth.
2. Build a Support Network: Surround yourself with people who uplift and encourage you. Community and connection are vital during tough times.
3. Focus on What You Can Control: In the face of adversity, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. Redirect your energy to the aspects within your control and take actionable steps forward.
4. Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself. Acknowledge your efforts and celebrate small victories along the way.

Let's start a conversation: How have you cultivated resilience in your own life or career? What strategies have helped you overcome your challenges? Share your stories and tips in the comments below! 👇
