One: On a Personal Note

Hard Stuff:

My darling hubby blurted, “You don’t have to tell the whole world!” He’s more private than me. You, see, less than a month ago we met with a surgeon to discuss my preference for a lumpectomy or mastectomy for breast cancer.

When you receive this message, I will be in the day surgery department of the Rockyview hospital for a lumpectomy. A small insertion will be made to remove the tumor and maybe a couple of underarm lymph nodes.

I sometimes feel frustrated. When I am not polite, I say PISSED OFF! This is a stinky nuisance interfering with all the activities I love to do—writing, facilitating healing, speaking, shmoozing, and being silly. ❤️🐞

Uplifting Stuff:

Prevention: In December my wonderful doctor insisted on a mammogram. I lamented, “I’m in my late seventies. Do I have to?” I obeyed. If you have breasts, please go for a mammogram!

Social Support: My feeling is grateful and my attitude is to welcome all the love, support and positive messages available. After all, there is ample research indicating a social network can facilitate healing — “Social support is key for patients to adapt to their new situation.” (Osann et al., 2014). When asked, “Can I tell others your news?” I respond with, “Please tell anyone who cares about me?”

Receive: I am the blessed recipient of an Amazon delivered book, The Atomic Habit (thank you Kimberly Lyall), a “God, our Father, Savior. . . ” prayer (thank you Roger Grant), a Reiki distance healing (thank you Ravi Tangri), and a spirit-mind treatment (thank you Sabrina Mauro and Marjorie Contenti).

In that incident, I was the first individual, in the known history of the Calgary Center for Spiritual Living, to request two spiritual practitioners to treat at the same time. Either Sabrina or Marjorie said, “Wow! We’ve never been asked for a dual treatment. One of us will start and the other will end. Ok?” One held my left hand in her generous, soft, and warm hand, while the other held my right hand in her delicate, defined, and cool palm. I allowed myself to breathe in the paradox of life — warm and cool, pain and pleasure, up and down . . . all of it!

Plus friends and members of the Canadian Association of Professional Speakers have organized some meals to come Les’ and my way (thank you Tina Varughese). Les is dreaming of surf and turf.

Experience and Knowledge: Our daughter-in-law, Chandra died over 20 years ago of breast cancer. So our son, Benjamin gets it for his mom and dad. Les has prostate cancer and is well informed about the subject. Our daughter, Katie, is a survivor of breast cancer, as are our friends Suzn and Mary as well as cousin, Linda. I am fortunate to have these knowledge keepers as my watch and lay consultants.

Humor: A bit of laughter helps unpleasant surprises. Here’s mine; “My husband, Les, has been living with prostate cancer for 12 years. I have breast cancer. We are now the perfect asexual couple.”

Acknowledge the Love: I’ve been calling friends and family to say, “I have so often felt loved by you. Because you are in my Heart Circle I want you to hear my news from me.” Interestingly enough that circle keeps beautifully swelling. I’ve long said, “What you focus on, expands.” Please if you feel loved by others, tell them. It will touch their hearts.

Here’s to your continued resilience in 2024!

It marked an aha moment when my client emphatically said, “I was brainwashed as a child to believe I was damaged goods. No wonder the negative voices in my head are so overwhelming. I’m ready to challenge them.” I felt pleased that our self-talk interventions were proving effective. She was clear that her thoughts weren’t . . . CLICK HERE.
