Your Uplift - October 2023

In-joy the read & viewing!

On a Personal Note

Hard Stuff:

Have you ever felt the strain of having your loved ones in pain? In the last few weeks, two of my family members have struggled with broken bones and other body ailments, and another with the sorrow of relationship disconnect.

Yes, as a therapist I regularly listen to and am touched by my clients’ struggles, adversity, and trauma. Yet it is with my family members that I often feel helpless, powerless and worried. Consequently, I continue to learn about the human condition on this planet, accepting that we are are perfectly imperfect in this human journey.

Uplifting Stuff:

My hope is that you had a special Canadian Thanksgiving weekend filled with golden colours, a sight of a sunflower or other harvest bounty, and smiles on your loved ones’ faces. It was the first year weather allowed us to share our meal in the back garden. Bless the hands that prepared the food!

Let us carry the spirit of giving thanks into tomorrow, next week and the rest of our lives.

Family members who could make it, tipped their glasses in gratitude. Regrettably, coughing and hacking kept our son, and friend, Jannette away. Yes, Jannette is like family. I like the idea, of “If you don’t have connection with bio-family members, spend time with those who feel as dear as family.” ❤️🐞

“I’m stressed!” Repeatedly people come to see me for counselling because of the stress in their workplace or personal life. However, after we explore their history, we discover that they are living with stress and trauma, that is unresolved trauma. So, what does that mean?

My clients, who come for therapeutic relief, are not an unusual population. In our fast-paced world, it’s not uncommon to hear. . . READ MORE.

In a recent social media exchange, the question of when to accept the status quo and when to uphold one’s beliefs was sparked. I posted, “When faced with an unchangeable situation, take a moment to reconsider your perspective.” I firmly believe that adapting to change is a valuable skill.

However, one person’s response challenged my viewpoint: “Patricia, I usually love your posts, but I disagree with this one. When can you truly say a situation is unchangeable? And when is it right to compromise your beliefs?”

In my reply, I expressed my appreciation for the thoughtful question and my enthusiasm for . . . READ MORE

How to Resolve the Blame Game in Conflicted Situations

“At the root of every tantrum and power struggle are unmet needs. People do not hear our pain when they believe they are at fault. Every message, regardless of form or content, is an expression of a need. Your presence is the most precious gift you can give to another human being.” Marshall B. Rosenberg

Blame hinders conflict resolution by fueling resentment and defensiveness. Effective resolution requires empathy, communication, and responsibility. Blame can be replaced by creating space to listen, seeking to understand the other, and a willingness to engage in dialogue and mutually agreeable solutions. Join us to discover:

BNI is the largest global referral marketing organization, currently operating with over 300,000 members in 75+ countries. I joined BNI in 2006 as a brand-new business owner, since then, my business has grown more than 5 fold. Even more significant to me is the tremendous personal development and immensely supportive community that I have gained from this organization.
